Whitening Teeth - Home Remedies
While smiling in general makes you feel better - in some instances you might also feel a bit overly conscious about showing your teeth. This is usually the case if your teeth are discoloured or cracked. There are quite a few products you can purchase to remedy this, however, figuring out which ones are the most effective can be a tad difficult. Home remedies are also an option. First of all, let’s take a look at what causes teeth to discolour:
Discolouration of teeth is blamed on two things: the food you eat and time. With time, the enamel on teeth starts to thin and become transparent. Dentin, which is the inner layer of a tooth, then starts to look darker. Depending on your drinking habits, certain types of liquids also stain teeth such as red wine, cola, tea and even coffee. Smoking can also discolour your teeth.
If you want an easy home remedy you can use peroxide which is used in a lot of whiteners. This bleaching agent is quite safe. The bubbles it forms on the enamel of the tooth helps to get rid of the staining. The more peroxide you use and the longer you leave it on, the whiter your teeth will be. You have to be careful though, as it could cause your teeth to be sensitive, temporarily.
A representative of the American Dental Association states that there are three groups of people who should not resort to home remedies for whitening teeth. They are: those whose teeth look less yellow and more gray, those who have fillings or crowns on their front teeth and those who have teeth that are extremely sensitive to the cold.
