With so many choices in the meat section of the grocery store today, it is hard for many individuals to choose the healthiest option available. The majority of families eat at least one serving of protein the in form of beef or chicken per day. While chicken is the leading protein cooked and served in the home, restaurants tend serve four times more beef than chicken.
Over the years, beef seems to have gained a bad reputation as the “unhealthy” dinner option with it’s high fat content of as much as 24 grams per serving and as much as 85 grams of cholesterol per serving. Added to a low fat diet, beef can be extremely nutritious having as many as 26 grams of protein per serving. Chicken has always had a much deserved reputation as a healthy dinner option having as few as 2 grams of fat per serving and almost no cholesterol. One portion of chicken breast will give you 30 grams of protein however the darker meat on the leg and thigh will provide more fat and less protein.
While, chicken upholds it’s stellar reputation as a healthy option and beef does the same for it’s bad reputation, the reality is dependent upon the cooking method. Both sources of protein can be made healthy or unhealthy depending on how they are prepared. Although chicken is healthier overall, simple preparation without adding fat or preservatives would make either beef or chicken a great choice for a healthy source of protein.
