Neck Could Indicate Future Obesity
The results of a new study seem to indicate that there is a link between obesity and a person’s neck size. The study was published in Pediatrics, a medical journal.
Olubukola Nafiu and his team discovered that measuring a child’s neck size was a far better indicator of obesity than the current method of using BMI. Body Mass Index typically compares a person’s weight against their height and determines how overweight they are. It does not possess the means to measure muscle mass or even larger bones. This effectively means that BMI is more a guideline than an absolute fact. Although it may work on a broad level, it by no means the be all and end all of obesity calculations.
Another method that has been suggested is measurement of the waist. This method is said to me more accurate in terms of evaluating health risks such as heart disease, diabetes and high blood pressure. It is also useful for measuring abdominal fat levels. Dr. Naifu however, maintains that his method is more comfortable and is more accurate than the aforementioned methods. He based his findings on a study of over 1,000 children (boys and girls) aged between six and eighteen.
The study was backed by the U.S. Preventive Services Task Force which in turn is backed by the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality. The task force and the study, both recommend screening to begin as early as six years of age in order to help the child.
